Copilot prompts for legal teams: 8 ready-to-copy examples
Eight Copilot Chat prompts for legal teams: clause, contract comparison, formal notice and regulatory monitoring, from Beginner to Expert level.
When to use it
Before attaching a contract, check its sensitivity label, anonymise the parties and attach only the useful clauses. Copilot Chat's web queries follow a regime separate from that of attached files according to the Microsoft documentation in force in September 2026.
To adapt one of these prompts, open the composer and choose the "Legal" template in the list of job templates.

Beginner
1. Explain a clause in plain language to managers (Beginner)
BeginnerContext. An internal training session requires explaining a common clause to non-lawyers, without it looking like personalised advice.
Explain in plain English what a non-compete clause is. Context: internal training for non-lawyer managers, French employment law. Expectations: definition in two sentences, validity conditions in three bullets, one concrete example where the clause would be invalidated, 120 words at most. End with the sentence "This explanation is general and does not replace the legal department's opinion on a specific case."Expected result. An educational and accurate explanation, with the caveat that prevents it from being read as advice.
Mistake to avoid. Presenting the reply as legal advice on a case: it is a general explanation, to be validated.

2. Question to an attached document with mandatory quotation (Beginner)
BeginnerContext. You ask a factual question of an attached set of rules and require the exact passage, with a rule for absence.
From the attached file rules.pdf only: [question, for instance: how many extra days of leave are granted for moving house?]. Answer in one sentence, then quote word for word the passage of the document and its article number. If the document does not address it, answer "not found in the document" and do not fill in with a general rule.Expected result. A one-sentence answer, the exact quotation with its article, or an honest "not found".
Mistake to avoid. Asking "what does this document say about leave?": with no quotation required, Copilot mixes the document and general law.

3. Compare two versions of a contract (Intermediate)
IntermediateContext. The two anonymised versions of a contract are attached; you want a table of changes before the negotiation.
From the two attached files only, contract_v1.docx and contract_v2.docx: Step 1: list the clauses changed, added or deleted, with the article number and the quotation of the passage in each version. Step 2: for each change, describe the practical effect in one sentence. Step 3: flag the clauses that carry a risk for our company and explain why in one sentence. Format: table clause, type of change, quotation v1, quotation v2, effect, risk level. If you are not certain a clause has changed, mark it "to be checked".Expected result. A change-tracking table, quotation by quotation, with doubts marked instead of settled.
Mistake to avoid. Believing that Copilot reads exhaustively: the lawyer confirms every line in both documents.

4. Framed web search on a regulation (Intermediate)
IntermediateContext. You are drawing up a briefing on a recent obligation with source criteria, dates and links.
Search the web for the [topic] obligations applicable in France as of [date]. Use in priority official sites (legifrance.gouv.fr, service-public.fr, ministry sites), then professional bodies. For each obligation: title, reference text, date of entry into force, exact link to the page consulted, publication date of the page. Separate "What the text says" and "Interpretation". If two sources contradict each other, present both. If you find no official source, say so instead of citing a blog.Expected result. A briefing where every obligation has a reference text, a link and a date, and where interpretation is kept apart.
Mistake to avoid. Asking for "the new obligations in 2026": Copilot relies on a forum and an outdated article.

Advanced
5. Reply to a formal notice, clause by clause (Advanced)
AdvancedContext. The formal notice and the applicable contract are attached, anonymised; the reply is built in three validated steps.
You are an in-house lawyer. From the attached files formal_notice.pdf and contract.pdf only, proceed in three steps and wait for my validation after each. Step 1: summarise the grievances and demands of the opposing party. Step 2: confront each grievance with the clauses of the contract, quoting the clause word for word with its article; write "no clause found" if necessary. Step 3: propose a reply outline in three options, from the firmest to the most accommodating. Constraints: no concession not grounded in a quoted clause, courteous tone. Format: table grievances, clauses, quotations, then outlines.Expected result. A reasoned reply clause by clause, with three posture options, every concession tied to an article.
Mistake to avoid. Letting the model assert a non-existent clause: every quotation must be found in the contract before use.

6. Compliance of a procedure with six requirements, quote before judging (Advanced)
AdvancedContext. You assess an internal procedure against a list of requirements, requiring the extraction of quotations before any verdict.
Step 1: for each of the six requirements below, extract from the attached file procedure.pdf the passage word for word that addresses it, with the section number; otherwise write "no passage found". Step 2: from the quotations of step 1 only, state for each requirement Compliant, Partial or Not addressed, with a one-sentence justification that refers to the quotation. Step 3: list the requirements to be decided by a human. Format: table requirement, quotation, section, verdict, justification.
Requirements: [list]Expected result. A verdict per requirement, each backed by a verifiable quotation or a "no passage found".
Mistake to avoid. Asking "is this procedure compliant?": Copilot judges without quoting, and the verdict does not withstand challenge.

7. Regulatory mapping and points of interpretation (Expert)
ExpertContext. The obligations mapping and two new texts are attached; the analysis declares its uncertainties.
Act as a regulatory lawyer. From the attached files mapping.xlsx, text_A.pdf and text_B.pdf only, proceed in four steps. Step 1: identify the new, amended or repealed obligations, citing the article of each text. Step 2: assess the impact of each change on our three entities, described in the mapping. Step 3: propose a compliance plan with a proposed owner and a deadline derived from the date of entry into force. Step 4: list the uncertain points of interpretation to submit to counsel, with your confidence level for each. Format: table obligations, articles, impacts, actions, then list of uncertainties.Expected result. An up-to-date mapping, a bounded plan, and a list of uncertainties that separates the established from the interpreted.
Mistake to avoid. Applying a text without checking its consolidated version and its date of entry into force: the model may cite an outdated version.

8. Copilot usage rules for the legal department (Expert)
ExpertContext. You write the department's policy: which documents may be processed, how to anonymise, how to check.
Write a Copilot Chat usage policy for a legal department of [number] people, in one page. Sections: 1) documents allowed after anonymisation (template contracts, procedures, public texts), 2) forbidden documents (named litigation files, documents classified confidential, health data), 3) three-step anonymisation method, 4) mandatory verification rule for every quotation of a clause or a text before use, 5) label to place on a document prepared with the tool's help, 6) what to do in case of doubt. Phrase each rule positively and in a checkable way. Context: conversations are logged by the organisation, attached files are stored in the work OneDrive, web queries are not covered by the same regime as the rest.Expected result. A one-page policy, in positive and checkable rules, ready to submit to management.
Mistake to avoid. A policy made of vague prohibitions: without an anonymisation method or a verification rule, it is not applied.

Frequently asked questions
Can Copilot Chat give legal advice?
No. It summarises, compares, extracts and structures. Every quotation of a clause or a text must be checked in the document or on Légifrance, and the analysis remains the lawyer's. Always ask for the separation between what is established, with a source, and what is interpretation.
Can I attach a real contract?
Check the sensitivity label and the internal policy. Attached files are not used to train the models and stay in your work OneDrive, but conversations are logged. Anonymise the parties and the amounts, and attach only the useful clauses.
